Synopsis
Bed of Roses is a comedy set in a charity shop in the 70’s when this type of shop relied entirely on helpful volunteers to keep it going. Laura Fitzwater Brown manages the High Street shop selling anything from a saucepan lid to a saucy bikini. Her devotion to the work springs from her need to forget her unhappy marriage. She believes strongly that her husband, Gerald, is in love with another woman. The shop’s customers are a mixed bunch hunting for a bargain and enjoying a good gossip. Little do they know that something special, secret, and valuable lies hidden away among the second hand clothes, and tatty old furniture. Or do they know? Clarissa, an attractive, cockney helper, looks hopefully for romance as well as cheapbooks and clothing. She becomes interested in Ashley a charming but devious young man. Meanwhile down and out Bert tries very hard to improve himself just in case there’s a chance for him with Clarissa. Problems mount. The day before the official opening they learn that the taxi men, who previously rented the shop, gave it a very immoral image. A comical Shop Inspector threatens to close them down, the shop’s owner changes her mind and wants to sell the shop, and suddenly the roof leaks. Not only charity shop donors and customers will appreciate the humour of this hilarious play.
