Synopsis
When Philip Pelf loses his wealth as his fleet of ships is lost in a storm, his sons, Paul, Mark and Eddie, are overjoyed, as is his youngest daughter, Lynette, the beauty of the family. Now they can earn not only an honest living, but also a lot of self-respect. Only the two elder sisters, Marilyn and Caroline are distraught by the change of circumstances, which is why they cheer up when one of the ships reaches harbour, meaning only money and expensive gifts to them. The boys want nothing more than farming aids, whilst beauty asks for a simple rose. Lost on his return from the ship, Philip stumbles upon a castle, apparently only occupied by housekeeper Jenny Jessop, her son, Tony and a mysterious host. When Philip picks a rose, the host appears as a fearsome monster, and only a promise to send a daughter back to the castle allows Philip to escape. Beauty agrees to return and, although terrified of the beast, makes the best of things for her father’s sake. Despite being eventually allowed to go back to her family, Beauty finds herself drawn back to the castle where love triumphs and the beast is transformed by her kiss.
Cast of 10 main characters and chorus parts of servants, villagers, country folk, messenger, fortuneteller, baker, butcher, grocer doctor and vet.
