Synopsis
Humorous memories of a South African cricket tour, and the team’s mad, scary night in a new, ill-equipped safari park, prompted playwright Doris Hilliard to write Leg Before Wildebeest which was premiered at the Quay Theatre, Sudbury. Though the eight characters are all fictitious, some of the play’s comic situations have been dramatized from the cricket team’s unexpected and hilarious safari experience in Zulu land. The team has its followers: Umpire Thomas’s attractive wife, Fiona, who is terrified of wild animals. She is bored with cricket, and her husband, and wishes vehemently that she had stayed at home. Most of the team try their luck to no avail, with Fiona’s attractive niece, Samantha, who has eyes only for Dennis, the cricket captain. She unfortunately lands herself in a compromising situation along with Cecil an unpopular member of parliament who thinks he can do anything as well as play cricket like one of the team. Meanwhile the umpire gets lost in the bush and their only light begins to fade. And the elephants upstage the local wildebeest who really haven’t a clue what cricket is all about anyway. And then there are the local Zulus…Oh yes! It just isn’t cricket, old boy…but it will have you chuckling in the crease, giggling at the googly and splitting your sides in the slips! Michael Munn, co-writer of the play, was an assistant to the legendary film director, John Huston, and has appeared in BBC TV dramas (Over here and Insiders) He is also the author of 17 published books.
