Synopsis
This charming pantomime opens at Lucre Hall, home of rich merchant, Squire Lucre and his two daughters, Beauty and Lottie. Bertie Boots is looking_ after the squire’s dancing pumps. His ma, Dame Bagwash is the housekeeper.
News arrives that the Squire’s merchant ship has foundered with all it’s precious cargo. Then the dame’s chip pan causes a disastrous fire. The squire has to move to a tiny cottage leaving Bodgit the builder to repair the mansion while he travels away to see what can be salvaged from his ship.
Bertie, Dame and Bodgit work a ’slosh’ redecorating routine at the hall. Bodgit is really a woman in very false disguise as a builder wanting to get close to the squire who she fancies.
Everything on the ship is lost so the squire picks a rose from a lovely garden, the only thing he can take back to his dear Beauty. But he is caught taking the rose by a man with the look of a wild beast who threatens to make the squire his slave. The beast longs for the true love of a wife and allows the squire to go home to ask one of his girls to accept, vowing to return to the beast should his daughters choose to say no.
Beauty accepts in order to save her father and is taken to the beast’s castle to live forever, never to see her father again. The castle is in an idyllic place and she is happy with the birds, animals and flowers, the beast being kindly to her. She sings and dances for him and he falls in love with her.
The dame and Bertie arrive with news that her father is ill and shows Beauty in a magic hand mirror. She is distraught so the beast allows her to visit her father, taking gifts, on the promise that she will return as he cannot live without her.
Rallied by Beauty’s visit, the squire holds a party where in a comic game she distributes the gifts. Her father persuades her to stay, but via the magic mirror she sees that the beast, pining for her, is now quite ill. She keeps her promise and returns to save the beast, now declaring her love for him. The announcement and her kiss causes the beast to magically transform back into a handsome prince. The curse on him has been removed. All attend the wedding and the prince awards squire with a knighthood and much wealth, to the great delight of spendthrift daughter, Lottie.
Packed with witty comedy, song and dance routines, Beauty And The Beast contains all the tried and tested panto elements with the opportunity for big production numbers. A show that has had many productions.
Ten principal characters plus chorus, dancers and children’s troupe as required. Six different scenes. Production notes included.
