Synopsis

Cinderella, the most popular of all pantomime subjects hardly needs an explanatory synopsis but in Eric Fowler’s version high comedy mingles effortlessly with charm and pathos. The ugly sisters for example are nasty pests called Aphis and Millipede who indulge in comedy routines including fun with the Whatamess Monster and the slosh scene when getting ready to go to the ball.

The story begins with families at a picnic who when asked by the children to tell a story, relate the fable of a once wealthy Baron, now hard up because of his pesky step daughters extravagant use of credit cards. He is sad being unable to prevent the uglies from making life intolerable for his real daughter, Briar Rose, calling her Cinderella because she has to clean out the cinders of all the fires at Hardup Hall every day.

Magically, Baron Hardup walks in on the picnic and so the fable unfolds including the perky Buttons who loves and loses Cinderella to Prince Charming.

With eight principals plus minor roles, chorus, dancers and children as ballet mice, there is plenty of scope for big production numbers and fairytale sets. There are six different sets and the script comes with extensive production notes.

This Cinderella has been produced many times including professionally with Eric himself playing Baron Hardup.
