|
| Ann Gawthorpe, Lesley Bown
|
| A fast-moving and hilarious farce, ‘Don’t get Your Vicars in a Twist’ is simple to stage - there is only one set - but provides plenty of scope for actors to hone their comedy skills, both verbal and physical. Winner of the Derek Lomas Playwriting Competition in 2005, it proved to be a hit with audiences at its premier in the Wellington Literary Festival. There are 6M and 5F parts.

Synopsis
Churchwarden George Williams has let the empty vicarage to a travelling theatre company for a Murder Mystery weekend to pay for his daughter’s extravagant wedding.
Unfortunately, Bishop Herbert, determined to have the first parish with a female vicar, appoints the Rev. Caroline Timberlake before the event can take place. But when Caroline decides to keep a long-standing reunion with her college friends that very weekend, George grasps the opportunity to cash in. What he hadn’t reckoned on was his fellow Churchwarden Alan turning up determined to prevent the weekend going ahead. Even worse Bishop Herbert decides to pay an unexpected visit to Caroline.
Dickie, the theatre company proprietor also has a problem, half his company haven’t turned up and the rest are either fighting with each other or are drunk. His solution is to persuade the reluctant George and Alan to take on the roles of the Butler and a female Vicar.
When inebriated luvvie Ronald practices his new role of Bishop, George and Alan kidnap him thinking he is the real Bishop. Meanwhile the real Bishop is knocked out by Charles a short-sighted actor and hauled off by one of the guests, an amorous widow, to her bedroom. There is only one answer, they must rescue the real bishop and Alan must dress up as the Rev. Caroline so that Bishop Herbert can have a brief conversation with ‘her’ about the way forward for women vicars and then leave. Add in the fact that two of the guests believe they are in a quiet country hotel, and Caroline’s unexpected return and chaos ensues.
