| Now for something completely different to a traditional pantomime.
George The Gladiator is presented as a pantomime going wrong combined with costume mix ups.
This quite unique, absolutely zany and hilarious Panto-ish Comedy Adventure is packed with Roman legionnaires, gladiators, chariot races (in wheely-bins) and tiger wrestling (with a camel). George the village numpty, becomes a gladiator to save the village, but not without the help of his beloved Sally and his dog Scratch (in a penguin suit).
Easily adapted to incorporate local Roman history.

Synopsis
This Panto-ish Comedy Adventure makes a virtue of a small cast and limited budget and is flexible in the staging. It is presented like a pantomime going wrong. Due to mass illness much of the cast must play 2 or 3 characters (often at the same time!). Also due to costume mix ups we have a heroic dog in a penguin suit and a terrifying camel, I mean tiger.
General Ruckus and Captain Scandalus (Boo!) of the Roman army make a bet with Sally (Hooray!) that no one can win the Gladiator Games. Village numpty George (Hooray!) sets off with his faithful dog Scratch (in a penguin suit) to aid the village. He secretly trains to be a gladiator with Serius, the Master Gladiator himself.
Meanwhile Astrological Angie and George’s sweetheart Sally travel to the qualifying Gladiator Games to ask for his help, unaware of his true identity. George, now disguised as the mysterious Mysterius, wins such deadly games as the Egg and Spoon Race of Doom making it through to the finals.
General Ruckus despatches comic double-act Dumbus and Dumberus (played by one person) to go undercover. Scratch disappears after a falling out with George, who is captured in a dramatic battle with a whole Batallion of Romans (well, about 1 or 2).
Sally and Angie travel to the big city to rescue Mysterius. They outsmart the General, but Sally is Sally-napped in the process.
Mysterius overcomes his fears for Sally, Scratch and the village in the finals of the Gladiator Games. Scratch returns to help his friend triumph at such games as camel, err tiger, wrestling. George dramatically reveals his true identity to the astonishment of all. Sally escapes and drives George to victory against General Ruckus in the Chariot Race of Doom (on office wheely-chairs) and saves the village!
This script was originally performed near Silchester, the Roman city of Calleva, but could easily be adapted for other communities, incorporating local Roman history.
There is plenty of room for the ridiculous, but also for a little sadness, friendship, sacrifice and appreciation of penguins.
Cast: 8 principals + 4 group actors or more (1 M, 1 F, 9 or more either)
