Synopsis
The classic Charles Dickens story is brought to life in an easily-staged version, complete with a few well-known Christmas carols for the audience to join in. The play starts off with a bit of light-hearted background about Charles Dickens and the Victorian Christmas, before moving into Scrooge’s counting house on the night before Christmas. We meet the miserly Scrooge and his put-upon assistant Bob Cratchit before accompanying Scrooge on his travels with the three Ghosts. Along the way we meet the jolly Fezziwigs at their party as well as joining the Cratchits at their Christmas lunch. As in the classic story, Scrooge sees the error of his ways and decides to become a generous and benevolent employer to Bob Cratchit.
This is a dramatised reading for three actors. The original production used one man and two women to get a good range of voices. But this is not essential. The play can be very simply staged. All it requires is three stools/chairs and a limited number of props - hats, scarves, bells, candles, chains etc.
The three actors/readers should be in simple dark clothes as they all play several parts.
The sound effects can be produced by the actors or be from recordings. Lighting can be full on most of the time, but it would help the final scene if it could be a bit gloomy to start with.
The play is a reading, and so it is anticipated that the actors carry scripts at all times. It could be learnt, but there is no necessity. The main point of the piece is that it is a dramatised reading - and therefore suitable for any space from a large living room to a theatre stage. The complexity/simplicity of the production is in the hands of the producer.
There are 3 actors/readers. All actors are a Narrator at some time. Actor A also plays Scrooge and the other two Actors play all the other parts.
