Synopsis
"Mr Pickwick’s Christmas" is a heart warming, period (1820s) musical play for a large mixed cast of all ages, including children (9 M 11F plus minor roles and doubling).
Adapted from part of Charles Dickens’ "The Pickwick Papers", the play tells the story of the genial Mr Pickwick, who with his companions , Snodgrass, Winkle and Tupman, arrives in Dingley Dell for the wedding of Snodgrass and Emily Wardle, elder daughter of the hospitable Mr Wardle of Manor Farm.
Mr Wardle’s aging spinster sister, Rachael is duped by con man and cad, Alfred Jingle into eloping with him, Jingle knowing that Tupman has already declared his love for her. Wardle and Pickwick trace the pair to an inn and Rachael is returned to her family, Jingle having been paid off. A Christmas Eve party scene, which includes a "Mummer’s Play", ends the show.
Romance also flourishes between Mr Winkle and bridesmaid, Arabella Allen, and chambermaid Mary and comic Cockney boot boy Sam Weller who becomes Pickwick’s manservant. Other characters include Mr Wardle’s servant, the ever sleepy (and hungry) Joe, Rachael’s elderly deaf mother, Old Mrs Wardle, and motherly housekeeper, Emma.
The play can be staged with 2 main sets and 2 cloths.
Suitable period songs and traditional carols and Christmas music are featured ( including, "Joy To The World", "The Twelve Days of Christmas", and "O Holy Night") in a fun and festive seasonal alternative to pantomime.
