Synopsis
Hansel and Gretel makes a delightful alternative to the mainstream pantomime subjects in a story of good triumphing over evil, based on the fairytale by the Grimm Brothers.
A band of Gypsies meet the Prince who promises to reward anyone who can remove an evil Witch who has tricked him out of much of his wealth. One of the gypsy elders is Dame Dotty, who, tired of moving around the country, telling fortunes, making pegs and having no luck with heather, tries to get work looking after Hansel and Gretel, children of a woodcutter.
His wife is mean and cruel and persuades him to abandon the step children in the woods as there is not enough food for all. But the animals and birds guide them to a gingerbread house which they start to eat. Unfortunately the witch lives there and takes them in.
She feeds on children and locks Hansel in a cage to fatten him up while Gretel is put to housework. When preparing to cook the boy she tells Gretel to examine the oven heat but Gretel pushes the witch inside instead. Hansel discovers the prince’s treasure and they escape to return in to him. The prince rewards them and the woodcutter, his wife being banished.
Despite the nasty goings on there is plenty of comedy with a school scene featuring the Dame and her son, Tommy, plus an elderly tired panto horse called Zippy. There is also romance between the prince and Dotty’s daughter, Rose.
This pretty adventure story allows young performers to shine in a cast of ten principals plus minor roles, chorus, dancers and children as animals, birds, elves, and toys. There are five main scenes and production notes.
