Synopsis
An adaptation of the classic by Jane Austen. Romance, music, and dance make this a very pretty play. The story follows Fanny Price’s admission into the world of her relatives, the Bertrams, and to the sexual awakenings of the young members of the family. A demure heroine, Fanny is bullied by her vain, spoilt cousins. The only family member to show her kindness is her love-match, Edmund. The arrival of the Crawfords and departure of Sir John bring the plot some mischief.
The young people amuse themselves with amateur dramatics and flirting and bickering amongst themselves.
In emotive scenes in the second half, the couples dance at Maria and Mr Rushworth wedding. The tension has grown between the characters as Henry Crawford has admitted his love for Fanny, enraging Maria.
Fanny turns him down, however, and the marriage is not to last. We hear of Maria and Mr Crawford’s scandalous indiscretion and Julia’s elopement.
The final scene sees Edmund tell Fanny of his breakdown in relations with Miss Crawford, and the hope of a union with her.
