She now covets and is in the running for a new glossier publication. Taking advantage of the popularity of make-overs, she arranges for three of her readers to be given a reincarnation for one of the television programmes. This is to take place at Avril’s home and the three ‘volunteers’ - a teenager, a dowdy housewife and a graceless granny - duly arrive. This causes dismay to Avril’s husband, edgy from his recent redundancy and to her son who had invited friends for the weekend. Avril’s unwarned assistant Pat and secretary Mrs G are equally disconcerted and irritated. Yet all progresses as planned when the television presenter Jan Murray-Slade interviews the three women ‘before’. But Avril finds herself battling through the two-day transformation and growing increasingly frantic as her husband appears to take a shine to the predatory housewife and her son to the blossoming teenager. It is the next evening during the live transmission with the three now glamourised ladies, when serious disaster strikes. Avril believes she has lost everything - ruined the magazine’s image and damaged her relationship with the family and her staff. To her surprise she finds the situation draws everyone heart-warmingly to her defence. Then Avril discovers that the event was technically rescued and has in fact been well received and she is back in high favour. At this point, she makes the decision to leave while the party is still on and to make a fundamental lifestyle change of the kind she has been recommending to others.
