Synopsis

Dave, Mary’s Dad is busy decorating the Christmas Tree when Mary arrives demanding food, finding the fridge empty and clearing off to the Chippy. Just before teatime, Anna, Dave’s wife arrives home with loads of shopping wife. Over coffee they discuss their daughter. Anna has noticed she’s putting on weight. Is she pregnant? Anna thinks so and, on her return takes Mary on one side to talk to her. Who is this mysteriousd Joe whom Mary suddenly announces as her boyfriend - although they’ve “never been that far!” Anna thinks maybe God has something to do with it. Mary protests but reluctantly goes with Anna to the doctor’s for a check-up. Anna is also the doctor. In the consulting room she confirms that Mary is pregnant - a boy - a very special boy.

Meanwhile Caspar, an astrologer is preparing to catch a train. His two colleagues Mel and Baz have transport problems and they arrange to meet at the railway station.

Mary takes the scans of her pregnancy to Joe. He is delighted.

On a nearby Sheep Farm three shepherds shelter from the cold, snoozing in a barn. They are disturbed by Anna who chides them for sleeping on the job, but suggests that they go to the Star Inn where they could be the first to witness the birth of an important baby.

The three astrologers finally make it to the station, where the train is late. While they wait, Anna arrives and, in conversation with Caspar discovers their intention to visit 10 Downing Street to see what Prime Minister Herod might know about the imminent birth of a significant “leader of men”.

On their arrival their inquiry disturbs the Prime Minister who orders MI5 to search for the child and destroy him as a threat to his power and position.

The disappointed astrologers return to the station to find Anna already seated on the train, warning them to get to the new-born child before Herod’s men do, and apologising for not making it clear that the child is to be born in their own home-town.

The child is born. Mary and Joseph are staying at the Star Inn. Anna - the landlady is providing them with refreshments when the shepherds arrive, asking to see the baby and offering gifts. The simple nativity scene transforms, returning to the tea-table around which Anna and Mary had their earlier conversation. Mary assumes that all the story so far has been in her imagination - except that the three astrologers finally reach their destination, recognise the potential for the love of God to be made known in the world each time a child is born, and present their special gifts to Mary and her family around the tea table.

As Anna says “It’s love around the family table. It’s the Christchild born again, every minute of every day, in all our hearts....Bethlehem, Jerusalem, London, Melton Mowbray. Wherever! It’s the whole world in Morrisons! All that potential.”

Running time: 45 minutes.
