Synopsis

A group of professional stargazers have gathered at a remote space observatory in Cornwall to celebrate the career of brilliant astronomer, Professor Duncan Matthews. Hosting the soiree is observatory manager, Professor George Ingram, and his daughter Kitty. The other guests are Duncan’s three greatest proteges: husband and wife Kyle and Judy Mackenzie, and their former classmate, Colin Forbes. The latter is Kitty’s husband, but was formerly married to Judy. Also present is Duncan’s old friend, Margaret, who is providing the catering, along with her daughter Jane, with whom Colin is having a secret affair.

The party even attracts a gatecrasher, in the form of scatty scientific journalist, Sally Flint. Arriving woefully late for an interview she had scheduled with Colin, Sally is invited to join them for dinner and offered the spare room so that she can speak to Colin in the morning. The problem is, by the time Sally wakes the next day Colin is dead!

A lone detective, the curmudgeonly DI Birch, is dispatched to take statements and Sally is conscripted as his assistant. Between them they review the events of the previous evening, and interview the 7 suspects.

During the interval the audience complete prediction sheets (included) to identify the murderer, motive and clues. They must also identify the 3 other suspects who lied during their interviews. Questioning of the suspects by the audience is an additional option. (Note: It is better fun for the audience if they are allowed to divide into teams of their own choosing, rather than forcing groups of strangers together, as this can inhibit forthright debate.) A correct example of the prediction sheet is provided to aid swift marking of the submitted answers.

The mystery is finally unravelled after the interval, when the audience will see the murder take place.
