Cast Summary
Young Diana, The: 1M 3F
|
Synopsis
The four cast play examines the journey of Woman from the suffragette movement to the present day. The core of the play centres on a novel by Victoria novelist Marie Correlli entitled The Young Diana whereby a scientist, Dr Dimitrius undertakes to turn heroine Diana into an immortal goddess by scientific means.
The story of the Princess of Wales as female icon is subtly interlaced throughout. She is mainly referenced by use of quotations from Barbara Cartland novels.
Diana meets friend and suffragette Sophy. They discuss Diana’s “staged” death and her future plans to escape her present life in going to Geneva to assist scientist Dr Dimitrius with a unique experiment. In Geneva, his intention is revealed. He seeks to immortalise a woman into a beautiful and ever-youthful goddess. Rose is to act as Diana’s personal maid, though she and Dr Dimitrius are lovers and conspirators in using Diana as a guinea pig.
Rose shows sign of jealousy, which heightens. Dr Dimitrius leads Diana through the various stages of his experiment, culminating in a fantasy wedding scene.
When Diana emerges from the final stage of the experiment, Dr Dimitrius becomes besotted with her. Rose threatens to kill Diana. Dr Dimitrius steps in and sends Diana back to England and her friend Sophy who refuses to recognise her.
Dr Dimitrius turns up again to indicate his devotion to his creation. She rejects him. He declares that the experiment is not finished and leads her to a car which will take her to Paris.
But it ends in a contemporary with Rose making decisions on cosmetic surgery.
