Please be Patient
Anne Knight
Please Be Patient is a one act comedy in two scenes (the second scene is the smallest). The actors have to play dual roles. The play is set inside an unused room in a hospital. On this particular day the patients on a Psychiatric Ward manage to escape from their ward without being seen by their nursing staff. They make their way into an unused room which the bossiest patient insists on calling a waiting room. She decides to run a clinic in the room and gives herself the important job of Matron. Needless to say it isn’t long before mayhem commence when the real patients become fake patients. In Scene two the truth about this gang of patients comes out! They were all genuine actors working on the last episode of what was a long-going sitcom set in a hospital!

Synopsis

This play is set inside an unused room in a hospital. The patients are all having treatment for depression. On this particular morning they manage to escape after Lyn has found some tablets and fed them to the other patients. They’re fed up with being on the ward so they find an unused, empty room and Lyn (the bossy one) decides to run a clinic. She gives herself the position of Matron and Eleanor, her friend, becomes a nurse at the beck and call of Lyn. The only real patient in the pretend waiting room is Georgia who, unfortunately has just fallen off the back of a lorry!

Whilst waiting for a doctor to arrive, the patients become restless. There is also a woman - Matron calls her the Wanderer - who comes in and out of the waiting room for no particular reason other than to annoy the Matron. Friction raises it’s ugly head at times, as there does not appear to be a doctor.

Eventually a real nurse enters the waiting room and rounds up the patients and escorts them back to their ward.

In Scene Two you find out that the hospital patients are all actors and what you just watched, was the very last episode if a long and much loved long running TV show. The cast are upset about breaking up but…at the last minute they’re all offered to go to America to film the entire series for the second time.
