| Young Diamond is based on the Victorian novel At the Back of the North Wind by George MacDonald. Young Diamond, son of a London cab-driver, is taken on daring flights over London with North Wind - a mysterious but no-nonsense lady who, like most winds, can be both gentle and fierce, but is at heart wise and understanding. She guides Diamond to the Far North, where he meets a challenge and through it finds a new confidence in himself.
His parents, Arthur and Lil, don’t know what to make of this strange North Wind business…but eventually they too understand. On the way we meet pompous Mr Coleman, worried-to-death Aunt Alice, streetwise Nanny and happy-go-lucky Dorkin, with his travelling seaside stall. It’s comedy, drama and fantasy, but with a serious thread running through it.

Synopsis
The year is 1901 - or thereabouts. The scene, at the beginning, is the modest home of a London cab-driver, Arthur, his wife, warm-hearted Lil and their son, Diamond. Optimistic Arthur works for City ship-owner Mr Coleman, whose ship (uninsured!) is sunk in a Channel gale. Arthur loses his job, his house and his faithful horse, Old Diamond, but, never defeated, sets up on his own.
At the same time, something strange is happening to young Diamond. He’s visited by North Wind - a no-nonsense lady who, like most winds, can be gentle one minute and fierce the next, but who is also considerate and wise. She takes Diamond on flights over London to see what is happening in the world below and eventually, at his request, she guides him to the Far North where he undergoes a trial, a yes-and-no struggle to discover - himself!
Back home he finds the confidence to take his father’s cab to rescue poor Nanny from the clutches of her gin-soaked Granny; but Arthur and Lil are a bit dubious about all this flying about with the North Wind. I mean to say…..a wind’s just a wind.
Along the way we have pompous Mr Coleman, worried-to-death Aunt Alice, streetwise Nanny and cheerful Dorkin and his Travelling Toyshop! A comedy, a fantasy, with a serious thread running through it. And it will provide plenty of scope for the technicians!
