Synopsis
Super-chef Harry Manning is heading to America with his glamorous wife Jessica, a TV presenter, in order to further his media career. Their leaving party at Harry’s swanky London restaurant, Cake Hole, is to double as the debut of Harry’s star apprentice, Christian, who is to take over as head chef.
Co-owner, Jacqueline; long-suffering waitress, Kimberley; and jack-the-lad barman, Daniel, try to keep order, while Christian’s beautiful young wife, Madelaine, is enlisted to help Jessica entertain the celebrities. But the party finishes before midnight, when Madelaine is found stabbed to death in the wine cellar. Haughty food critic, Isambard LaRosier, completes the list of 7 suspects who were near the scene without an alibi.
The curmudgeonly DI Tony Birch is assigned the puzzling case and recalls the suspects to the restaurant the following day to undertake informal interviews, aided by his eager young assistant, DC Jane Spiller. They are also joined by Birch’s dizzy fiancée, Sally, who begs for the chance to be allowed to meet Harry.
During the interval the audience complete prediction sheets (included) to identify the murderer, motive and clues. They must also identify the 3 other suspects who lied during their interviews. A correct example of the prediction sheet is provided to aid swift marking of the submitted answers.
The mystery is finally unravelled after the interval, when Birch explains who did the deed and, more bafflingly, why.
