Boadicea The Pantomime Pantomime Script by Giles Black

Boadicea The Pantomime
Giles Black
An affectionate send-up of Boadicea’s historical revolt. Good Queen Boadicea is denied her rightful place as queen by the Nero, the bad Emperor of Rome and even worse player of the lyre. But wait! Can she really overcome the might of imperial Rome with the inept assistance of Magimix the druidess, Cumulus and Nimbus, her two educationally challenged slaves and the entire Iceni tribe to win back her kingdom? Can her daughters really find true love deep down within the catacombs and can the true reason for Stonehenge ever be revealed?

Boadicea The Pantomime: 9 Principals
Synopsis

Once upon a time in ancient Britain. While Magimix the druidess is cooking up her new potion, involving the strangest of ingredients for this week’s school dinners, she explains that the Roman Empire has taken over most of the country. Only the land of the Iceni tribe ruled over by good Queen Boadicea is still free, but the evil Emperor Nero is determined to have it for himself because, convinced that he can actually play the lyre, he wants the money it would bring him for his new theatre in Rome where everybody will be forced to listen.

Caratacus, a stranger to the village meets and fall in love with Voria, one of Queen Boadicea’s young daughters. Queen Boadicea appoints him prime minister to help her run the country since he is clearly unsuited to do anything else. His first task is to govern the tribe while she and her daughters go off to the royal palace to ask the Emperor Nero to approve her late husband’s will leaving all his money and property to her. Nero, however, refuses to do unless all the really heavy taxes are paid.

Boadicea is understandably furious and hits him over the head with his own lyre. For this she is sentenced to fight the Emperor’s own pet gorrilla in the ampitheatre. Contrary to all expectations and by means of unforeseen events, she wins and flees with her two daughters to the mysterious temple of Stonehenge, hotly pursed by an irate Nero. Here Magimix intervenes and with the help of all the mysterious little people of the forest sends Nero and his not so brave legionairres packing. Scribbletas, Nero’s scribe is left behind where he and the other daughter, Denua meet and inevitably fall in love.

Foiled once again, Nero heads straight for Boadicea’s village where he collects all the taxes he has so unfairly imposed, leaving the tribe destitute. Caratacus, however suggests a cunning plan. Boadicea could break into the royal palace and steal them back? While her two daughters willingly volunteer to accompany her, she has to order her two rather stupid and cowardly slaves, Cumulus and Nimbus along as very unwilling conscripts.

At the palace, Boadicea, veiled and dressed as a slave girl is mistaken for the real thing and Nero ever on the lookout for a new wife pays court to her while her daughters steal back the taxes. Inevitably they are discovered and a chase round the palace ensues after which Boadicea escapes with the money while Voira and Denua are captured to be imprisoned within Nero’s horrible catacombs beneath his palace.

Meanwhile Cumulus and Nimbus have got "lost" along the way and are discovered by Nero wandering in the woods. By means of dire threats, they are persuaded to help him recapture Boadicea. Knowing this to be impossible in their current state of stupidity they persuade Magimix to teach them how to be clever in her school for the little people of the forest. Once that is achieved, Magimix advises them to tell Boadicea that her daughters can be rescued if she were to break into the catacombs at night while telling Nero to lay in wait for her in the morning when there will be enough daylight to see her.

When they do this back at the village, Magimix foretells that Boadicea can be a leader of a great revolt if she takes the rest of the tribe with her. Unfortunately, her grand speech does not inspire the tribes people, but only terrifies them and so she has to set off for the catacombs alone.

When she arrives, she finds that Voria and Denua aided by Scribbletas have escaped from their chains and are seeking a way out. But in a traditional pantomime scene, Nero’s horrible monster who dwells in the catacombs finds them and carries them off one by one. Fortunately Caratacus arrives just in time to save his beloved, win her hand in marriage and rescue the others from the monster’s lair.

Free to escape, they find the exit and climb upwards towards freedom only to find themselves back in Nero’s palace where he is waiting for them. Scribbletas only has time to propose to Denua before both are sentenced to the galleys. All the others face immediate execution when at last Magimix and the rest of the tribe finally arrive and with their help Nero and his legionairres are overpowered.

Only one problem remains. How is Nero to be punished? Various fates are suggested before Boadicea suggests the worst one of all. Nero will be forced to listen to her playing the lyre. In the face of such torture, Nero promptly agrees to do anything that is asked of him. Queen Boadicea can have her kingdom back, all the taxes are to be rescinded and the royal palace will be made available for both wedding receptions and everyone (except Nero) lives happily ever after.
