Synopsis
When Sharon, the leading soprano of the Off-the-Wall Theatre Company, has a car accident, the group’s latest production of Orpheus in the Underworld is in serious jeopardy. Where can the company possibly find a replacement soprano who can sing the demanding role of Eurydice? To save the show, Jack, the group’s ambitious chairman, produces a substitute leading lady - as if from nowhere.
But when Eva Rossini throws an unprovoked tantrum in her first rehearsal, then storms out in disgust, Mike, the musical director, and his shell-shocked cast start to realise that their production may be set for a bumpy ride.
After their first brush with the temperamental Diva, the cast are nothing if not wary of her, and are growing increasingly suspicious about Jack’s motives for bringing this troublesome stranger into their close-knit group. Only one of the members, old-stager Aggie, seems to have any prior knowledge of Eva, and most uncharacteristically, she’s not saying anything.
In spite of her initial walk-out, Jack has somehow used his influence to persuade Eva to give the group a second chance. But Eva the Diva also turns out to be Eva the Man-eater - so much so, that even notoriously promiscuous leading man Richard is nervous about being left alone with her. But Eva’s sights are firmly fixed on a more challenging target, and Barney, the local policeman, finds himself relentlessly pursued - even on stage - and in the middle of the dress rehearsal.
Will Eva play Eurydice - or Brünhilde? Can Barney (and the production) survive a rampaging Wagnerian Valkyrie? Or will the Off-The-Wall Theatre Company triumph over all their difficulties?
Prima Donna was originally written for the Concept Players Theatre Group, a musically talented group who had already put on a production of Orpheus in the Underworld, and therefore had no problem with the short extracts from the show. They also had several sopranos who could sing Eurydice! Therefore, for groups of a similar ability, the piece itself is a little ’light relief’ from their usual fare.
However, not all amateur groups have the range of abilities to cope with the music, or a really good soprano who can sing convincingly enough to play Eva. With this in mind, recordings are available of the music used in the podcast version of the show, allowing the play to be presented without any of the musical challenges.
Music available in .mp3 audio file and sheet music formats.
