Romeo and Juliet Brian Langtry This new version of the archetypal love story is set in today world of ‘clubland’ and employs an edited version of the Shakespearian text which retains all the dramatic beauty and power of the full original work. Romeo is a young DJ working at a club owned and run by his father, Mickey Montague, who in addition to managing the establishment has serious links into the seedy illicit underbelly of the world of clubs and music. The youthful Romeo has little knowledge or understanding of the privileged middle class environment in which Juliet - who nurses aspirations of becoming a star ballerina - is raised and cherished. Montague senior and Capulet senior have a long and antagonistic history and Mickey would dearly love to entrap the respected Capulet in order to build a little insurance in the event of past or future misdemeanours coming to light. The 22 original songs cover a wide variety of styles across rock, blues, ballad and show songs culminating in a seven minute finale of rousing, hand clapping gospel. Nine of the songs use the original script set to music and whilst the principal vocalists are Romeo and Juliet there are ample opportunities for the involvement of other singers (solo or chorus) and in simple dance routines.
