Synopsis
A Moorish comedy based on an Arab legend from Tales of the Alhambra (1832) by Washington Irving.
King Bobadil of Sirrocco is worried that his three attractive daughters are becoming too interested in the opposite sex and decides to send them, under the supervision of Kadiga, a court lady with a past, to a remote castle on the North African coast, where they will have no opportunity of meeting men.
Sirrocco and its Mediterranean neighbour , Analusia, are engaged in (yet another) warring dispute and three young roguish Analusian prisoners are brought to the castle (ostensibly to repair the crumbling foundations) by their guard, Abdulla, an old acquaintance of Kadiga. Against all the rules, individual meetings are arranged between the three princesses and the three prisoners and, of course, the inevitable happens - they fall in love.
But now, the royal astrologer, Astro, advises the king that the princesses are ripe for marriage and he, very conveniently, has selected three suitable suitors from the ranks of the rich and noble in Sirrocco, The king agrees. The princesses are up in arms, but the date for the proposals is fixed. Kadiga, however, has schemed to prevent the suitors from being informed and, unknown to the princesses, has the three prisoners, all convincingly disguised, take their place. The princesses accept the proposals but Astro (having been cruelly waylaid) suddenly turns up and exposes the deceptions. The king is outraged, until Abdulla brings the joyous news that the war is over and the prisoners are free men. Bobadil agrees that love and international friendship should prevail and the marriages go ahead. Only Astro disagrees and swears revenge.
